The main reason why Bassets are so popular is because Basset Hound grooming is basic and simple and because it can easily be done by anyone at home.
Since the breed is short haired, all the grooming Basset dogs usually require is regular brushing and the occasional baths using dog shampoo.
Basic Basset Hound grooming is a simple DIY task that any dog owner can perform at home. Since Bassets have short hair, no hair clipping is necessary. The only things a Basset owners needs to be prepared for are ear-cleaning, hair brushing and occasional bathing.
Bathing the Basset Hound Dog
An owner of a Basset Hound does have to give the pet the occasional bath. Any good shampoo for short haired dogs should suffice to keep the dog clean and his skin and hair healthy. The Basset Hound can be bathed in the tub or in the yard with the hose.
There are also dog washing businesses in many cities that will clean the pooch for the owner, but depending on your location prices may vary.
Since a Basset is a hound it should have no real problem with water or bathing. Nor should the bath be a big deal because this breed is very even tempered. Basset puppies might even enjoy a good bath every now and then.
Part of the Basset Hound grooming should be the regular flea and tick bath. This should be done whenever the owner thinks that the dog has been around critters such as fleas, ticks and chiggers.
Since Bassets are indoor dogs, they should get regular flea and tick dips in order to keep those bugs out of the home.
In particular, the hound should be bathed whenever it visits the countryside or an open outdoor area such as a park in flea and tick season. Basset puppies on the other hand won’t need to be bathed until they come in contact with other dogs, besides their mother.
Combing the Basset
Basset dogs need regular combing, especially those that spend a lot of time indoors because this breed can shed a lot. Combing a Basset once a week using a firm bristle brush is usually enough except for the time of the year when the dog is shedding.
Always be careful not to hurt the dog when combing it. Before combing, look over the dog carefully to make sure there are no cuts, sores or wounds that could be made worse by the combing brush. Comb around such sore spots to avoid causing pain to the dog.
Ear Cleaning and Nail Cutting
It will also be necessary to wipe the area under the Basset Hound’s ears off with soap and water about once a week. This has to be done because the Basset is a long eared dog and long eared dogs are prone to ear infections.
Cleaning the area under the ear should prevent infections. Ear cleaning products are available at every pet shop and they aren’t too pricy.
Basset Hound grooming also includes nails-cutting on a regular basis, usually about once a month. An owner should be able to do this on their own with nail clippers purchased from a pet store.
This is an important part of your Basset’s grooming since not clipping its nails can harm your dog.
Moreover, if your Basset spends a lot of time indoors then it would be wise to cut its nails to avoid ending up having scratched furniture or floor.
However, if you plan on cutting your dogs’ nails then you should be careful. Any dog’s nails have nerves, just like human nails do, therefore you should not cut too much as you can hurt your dog.
